Appointments are Required to Surrender a Dog or Cat

Surrender/Rehome

Making the decision to give up your pet can be very difficult. In many cases, we can help you come up with alternative solutions to help you keep your four-legged family member. We can offer advice and may be able to help with behavior and/or medical issues. Call or stop by for more information. (541) 997-4277

We are a limited intake, no-kill facility and can only accept animals when space is made available by our current animals being adopted. Since there is usually a waiting list, this can take days, weeks, even months.

  • Call or come to the shelter and complete an Intake Request form and a Pet Personality form. This doesn’t guarantee your pet will be placed with us, but does put you in line for consideration.
  • An examination and/or behavior assessment may be conducted prior to your pet being granted intake. OCHS can’t take feral cats or people-aggressive dogs.

If rehoming your pet is the only solution, we’ll do courtesy postings on social media to help you find a new home for your pet.

Stray Intake

When you find a stray dog within the City limits, please contact the Florence Police Department at (541) 997-3515 for pick up. For strays outside the City limits, please call the shelter and talk to staff about options. Not every loose dog is a stray. We keep a Lost and Found report. We may already know who the dog belongs to, and can help you reunite the dog with its people.

Our cat areas are consistently full. We need to quarantine new feline arrivals to ensure the health of the other cats in the shelter, so  there may not be space to take in a stray cat or kitten. Because of this, scheduling the drop off of the cat is critical. Please call the shelter for space availability at (541) 997-4277.

Emergency Veterinary Services

The Oregon Coast Humane Society does not have a full time veterinarian on call.

In a medical emergency:

Veneta Veterinary Hospital
88233 Territorial Rd., Veneta (541) 935-4151 www.venetavet.com

Springfield Emergency Veterinary Hospital
1821 Pioneer Parkway, Springfield (541) 746-0112 www.emergencyvethosp.com

Wilvet South

Microchip Your Pet

A microchip is a rice-sized, radio-frequency identification device (RFID), that is quickly and painlessly inserted under your pet’s skin. It’s not a GPS, but a permanent form of ID that can be registered in our recovery database, which holds info about the pet and its owner.

We can perform the procedure while your pet is awake or under general anesthetic, and usually try to complete it during another routine procedure such as spaying or neutering. However, microchipping can also be done on its own and only momentarily uncomfortable for your pet.

We try to schedule a Microchip/Vaccine Clinic monthly from 10 a.m. to 3.p.m. Check back for dates or call us for an appointment 541-997-4277.

A Plan for My Pets™

Have you ever wondered what would happen to your pets if something happened to you? OCHS can help. A Plan for My Pets™ ensures continuing care for your beloved companions, should death or serious disability separate you.

Often, pets are brought to the shelter by grieving families or local authorities, and we don’t know what they like to eat, what medications they need, or anything about their personalities. Please consider completing A Plan for My Pets™ questionnaires about your furry friends for OCHS to keep securely on file. The information you provide now creates a lifeline for the care of pets who may outlive you.

When you enroll in the program by including a gift of any size to OCHS in your will or other estate plan, we promise to receive, care for, and, should the need arise, place your surviving cats or dogs in loving new homes. And you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing OCHS will be there for your pets and your family in difficult times.

To find out more, please contact Executive Director Elizabeth Thompson exec.director@oregoncoasthumanesociety.org, 541-997-4277.
